Global Energy Company Accelerates Journey to Cloud-Native Operations with Trianz and AWS Outposts

Customer Overview

A global energy and petrochemical company with over 90 years of heritage and extensive operations in exploration, production, and export of oil and natural gas embarked on an ambitious digital transformation journey. Known for its commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and technological innovation, the company set a strategic goal of becoming digital-first, requiring a fundamental rethinking of its technology infrastructure.

Business Challenges

The Company faced several critical challenges with its legacy infrastructure:

  • Slow deployment cycles New applications and services took 6-10 months to deploy.

  • Limited technology choices Limited technology choices due to restrictive on-premises environment constraints.

  • Strict regulatory requirements Strict regulatory requirements including data sovereignty and compliance mandates.

  • Specialized workload support needs Specialized workload support needs for High-Performance Computing (HPC), virtual workstations, and Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU) applications.

  • Innovation barriers Innovation barriers preventing advanced analytics, AI, and ML implementation.

  • Skills gap Skills gap requiring development of in-house cloud competencies.

Solution Approach

After a comprehensive evaluation, the customer selected AWS and Trianz based on their unique combination of technical expertise and industry knowledge. Trianz brought deep oil and gas industry expertise, OSDU framework knowledge, and the comprehensive capabilities of its hyper-automated Concierto platform.

AWS Outposts Reference Architecture

Trianz designed a comprehensive architecture leveraging AWS Outposts as the infrastructure foundation within the company's data center:

  • Foundation Layer: AWS Outposts rack providing local AWS compute and storage, integrated with Amazon S3 for object storage, Amazon EKS/ECS for container orchestration, and AWS Systems Manager for operational management

  • Compute Layer: Amazon EC2 instances running locally on Outposts for consistent performance, Amazon Lambda for serverless computing where applicable

  • Security & Compliance: AWS IAM for identity management, AWS KMS for encryption key management, and AWS Security Hub for centralized security monitoring - all running locally on Outposts

  • Database Services: Amazon RDS on Outposts for local database operations with backup to AWS cloud when needed

  • Specialized Environments: Custom-configured Outposts capacity dedicated to HPC workloads, virtual workstation services, and OSDU data platform applications

Phased Transformation Strategy

  • Discovery & Assessment Trianz leveraged the Concierto platform to conduct comprehensive workload assessment and capacity planning. Business goals were mapped to AWS services available on Outposts, with specialized focus on OSDU framework alignment and HPC workload requirements.

  • AWS Outposts Landing Zone Design A hybrid cloud landing zone was architected using AWS Outposts as the core infrastructure, with Concierto automating infrastructure policies and configurations. The design included dedicated Outposts capacity allocation for different workload types, local storage optimization, and seamless connectivity to AWS cloud services when needed.

  • Pilot Migration & Environment Setup Critical applications were migrated to AWS Outposts to validate performance, security, and compliance. Concierto enabled secure provisioning and monitoring of specialized environments including HPC clusters running on Outposts, virtual workstation services with local compute power, and AI/ML environments with dedicated GPU instances.

  • Operating Model Definition & Enablement Trianz defined an ITIL 4-aligned Target Operating Model optimized for AWS Outposts hybrid operations. Concierto's no-code automation and comprehensive training sessions empowered the internal team for independent Outposts management and operations.

  • Full-Scale Migration & Modernization Trianz utilized proprietary tools and Concierto to scale application migration to AWS Outposts, ensuring all workloads benefited from local compute power while maintaining cloud-native capabilities. The modernization included optimization for Outposts-specific features and seamless integration with AWS cloud services.

Business Benefits

The cloud transformation delivered strategic value across several dimensions:

  • Significant reduction in deployment time, from 6–10 months to a few weeks.

  • Greater flexibility through hybrid operations and expanded technology choices.

  • Full regulatory compliance, with data residency and security frameworks designed into the architecture.

  • Support for complex workloads, including HPC, VWS, and OSDU-aligned applications.

  • Future-readiness for AI/ML, with integrated environments supporting advanced analytics.

  • Increased operational efficiency, powered by Concierto’s zero-code automation and real-time observability.

  • Self-sufficiency, via comprehensive knowledge transfer and enablement programs.

By partnering with Trianz and AWS, and leveraging the Concierto platform, the company now operates on a secure, scalable, and modern digital infrastructure, empowering faster innovation, data-driven insights, and competitive differentiation in a dynamic global energy landscape.
